Out-Of-State Companies Disregard Will of Wyoming People on Wyoming Range

Citizens Protecting the Wyoming Range, is outraged by a new proposal by a Denver-based energy company that could bring oil and gas development to cherished hunting grounds, trout streams, and favorite recreation areas.

“We’ve labored hard to see that the legacy of the Wyoming Range is forged by Wyoming citizens working together towards a common vision, one that does not include development in the Wyoming Range,” said Gary Amerine outfitter and co-founder of the Citizens group. “Senator Barrasso introduced the Wyoming Range legislation in Congress and that represents the will of the Wyoming public. People in Wyoming have given up enough for gas development—we need balance.”

Wyoming Range Fans Gear up for Round One of Drilling Fight

Release of a U.S. Forest Service draft plan to allow wildcat gas wells in the Hoback Basin southeast of Bondurant has galvanized Wyoming Range supporters, who view the proposal as a first step toward drilling throughout Wyoming's namesake mountains. "If they drill these wells, it'll be the beginning of the end for the Wyoming Range," said Dan Smitherman, an outfitter whose hunting permit area could be disrupted by the proposed drilling. "I support energy development as much as the next guy, but responsible development means recognizing some places - like the Wyoming Range - are too valuable as they are to drill."

2006-09-22  Nearly 20,000 acres of prime elk and mule deer habitat in Wyoming's namesake mountains are temporary off limits for oil and gas leasing under a decision issued by the U.S. Interior Board of Land Appeals. Siding with concerns raised in protests by outfitters, hunters and anglers, local residents, oil and gas field workers, and conservationists, the IBLA halted an April 2006 oil and gas lease sale in the Wyoming Range while it considers an appeal of the leasing decision.  ... more >>
